Debunking photography business myths!

FEAR | FALSE EVIDENCE APPEARING REAL

Let that sink in, fear is false evidence appearing real.

Myth #1: You can't specialize in just one area of photography.

When I began this business nearly 13 years ago I had SO MANY FEARS. I shot 2 weddings & quickly realized after I fell in a buddy of rain water & sat on the grandmother of the brides glasses that weddings were not my thang 😂 I wanted to photograph babies, families, children NOT weddings!

I will never forget a mentor/wedding photographer friend of mine tell me "If you don't shoot weddings you won't make it in this industry. All new parents hire their wedding photographer to photograph their babies."

I am so glad I went with my gut (and also a push from my husband). I saved this memory from a Facebook post & use it as inspiration when I am nervous to take the next step. I knew in my heart I was not a wedding photographer but I had no clue where to start. 12 years ago I googled newborn photographer workshops & off I went to my very first workshop & boy, did I learn a TON. You want to only photograph births??? DO IT. You want to only photograph seniors??? DO IT! Your clients will love to work with you because you love working with them, it will pay off!

Myth #2: You have to work nights & weekends to make an income in this industry.

FALSE, FALSE, FALSE. You are a business, set your work hours & stick to them. You don't arrive at Target & 2am and expect them to be open, do you? Create work hours that fill your soul with happiness, your work will shine & you will be happier.

It took me a LONG time to figure this out you guys! When I say a long time, 10 years to be exact. I worked so many nights & weekends. I missed practices, dinner time, games on weekends, friend time. It gave me anxiety & the moment I thought about shutting down the business I knew I had to make a change. End of 2021, I announced I will no longer be able to work nights & weekends. Another set of fear ran through me; will they leave me? Will they be angry? What will they think? But you know what, instead of client frustration I received these kinds of texts.....

I thought 2021 was a big year for me & I almost talked myself out of that annoucnemnt in fear of losing income/clients but you guys, 2022 will for sure be my biggest year yet AND I get to have the best of both worlds. Successful career & family time!

Myth #3 You can only shoot at golden hour to get a beautiful gallery.

I work 5 days a week, 3 of those days I do shoots. I can (I don't but if needed too haha!) I can do 6 shoots in 3 days ONLY shooting morning time.

Sunrise & Mid-Morning are hands down my favorite times to shoot. Kids are happy, by 9am you are at work/school & done for the day!

This session started at sunrise....

30 minutes after sunrise

Mid-morning
